TIP OF THE WEEK

Keep Book Pages from “Blowin’ in the Wind”

To me, summer means travel and traveling means relaxing with a good book to read — under a tree, at the beach, in my favorite deck chair — outdoor places where the wind can blow your pages around, making it hard to read or even hold the book. Here are a few suggestions of everyday things you can use as bookmarks that will help to keep your pages from blowin’ in the wind.

  • Decorative hairpins or spring clips — Not only will you be able to keep the hair out of your eyes on a windy day, but you can use two to keep pages from blowing. Make sure the clips you use are smooth or you might damage the pages.
  • A rubber band — Wrap a long, easy to stretch rubber band around the pages of your paperback to keep the wind from whipping them. I prefer to wrap the pages I have already read and when I am done reading move the band to mark my place. A rubber band wrapped around the outside of my book helps keep it from being damaged when packed in a picnic basket or vacation suitcase.
  • A hair band —This works on the same principle as the rubber band, but their longer length and extra stretchiness makes them a good choice for larger books.
  • Large paperclip — Use one or more to easily keep your pages in place.
